But how can anyone who does support him not be saddened at the effect of the "Lewinsky matter" on the rest of his life? I'm not suggesting some kind of simplistic cosmic magic, in which God automatically
curses Clinton's activities in one part of his life because of his sins in another area.
If I justify my affair by justifying my lusts, I will justify other bad decisions in other areas of my life. My ability to devise a strategy which will help bring long-term peace to the world will be sacrificed to bring short-term peace to myself. You children will imitate you in ways you never dreamed. You can tell them to avoid a certain destination, but if they're on the same course you are, they will continue to follow you. When an adult who practices X tells his children, "Don't do X," it is interpreted as "You can't do X until you're a grown-up like me." This obviously means that the quickest way to prove that one is a grown-up is to do X. Elsie feels like her life has been ruined. She avoids all OCCW people and circles, and wonders about the possibility of having any influence for good. The only thing worse than imagining one's kids experiencing the same pain is imagining them causing that pain to others.
The message of the Bible is clear, especially in books like Hosea: No matter how unfaithful we are to God, God is faithful to us. |
